Ethiopia’s long-term strategy aims to achieve net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2050 through a series of decarbonization pathways that balance economic growth, emissions reduction, and job creation. These pathways are structured around different levels of ambition, with the NDC-aligned scenario progressively increasing ambition to meet the NDC targets by 2030 and then achieving NZE by 2050. A maximum ambition scenario envisions reaching NZE as early as 2032, while a late action scenario delays emissions reductions until after 2040, still reaching NZE by 2050. Each scenario takes into account macroeconomic, social, and environmental impacts, ensuring Ethiopia’s transition to a low-emission future is in line with its national development priorities.
